FATHER'S DAY is a day celebrated around the world. However, in each country, this celebration is observed on a different day. In Great Britain, the third Sunday of June is declared Father's Day.
A few interesting facts about fathers:
The word father and its more colloquial counterpart dad have retained a familial root in several languages: Latvian tēvs, extinct Prussian tāvs, Latin tata, Polish tata, English dad, etc. Some linguists believe that this word comes from children's language, i.e., children, learning to speak, first try to pronounce simple combinations of repeating consonants with vowels: *tata, *atta (cf. Russian отец), *ptata (cf. Latin pater). Thus, the word dad, meaning "parent," could have originated and taken root from children's mouths.
Father's Day began to be celebrated in the USA, where its idea and first observance emerged in 1910. The movement to honor fathers was initiated in 1910 by Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, whose father raised all six children after his wife (Ellen Victoria Cheek Smart) died during childbirth.
